Core Web Vitals: How to Make Your Website Fast and Rank Higher
Core Web Vitals measure how fast and stable your pages feel. Learn what LCP, INP and CLS mean and the fixes that make the biggest difference.
Visitors decide in seconds whether a page feels fast. Google measures that feeling with three numbers called Core Web Vitals. Improving them helps both your users and your search visibility.
The three metrics in plain words
- LCP (Largest Contentful Paint): how quickly the main content appears. Aim for under about 2.5 seconds.
- INP (Interaction to Next Paint): how quickly the page reacts when someone taps or clicks. Aim for under about 200 milliseconds.
- CLS (Cumulative Layout Shift): how much things jump around while loading. Aim for a very small number, under about 0.1.
Fix LCP: make the main content arrive fast
- Compress images and use modern formats such as WebP or AVIF.
- Give the hero image the right size, not a huge one scaled down.
- Use fast hosting and a CDN.
- Remove render-blocking scripts and styles from the top of the page.
Fix INP: keep the page responsive
- Ship less JavaScript; remove libraries you do not use.
- Split heavy scripts so they load only when needed.
- Delay third-party widgets until the visitor needs them.
Fix CLS: stop the jumping
- Always set width and height (or an aspect ratio) on images and videos.
- Reserve space for ads, banners and embeds.
- Load fonts in a way that does not push the text around.
Measure the right way
Lab tests are useful for debugging, but field data from real visitors is what Google uses. Check both, and test on a mid-range phone with a normal connection, not only on a fast laptop.
Build speed in from the start
It is much easier to make a fast website than to fix a slow one. A clean structure, optimised images and a careful choice of scripts keep your scores healthy as the site grows.

Frequently asked questions
Do Core Web Vitals affect Google ranking?
They are part of Google's page experience signals. They will not beat great content, but a slow site loses visitors and can lose ground to similar pages.
How can I check my scores?
Use PageSpeed Insights or the Core Web Vitals report in Google Search Console, which uses data from real visitors.
What usually makes a site slow?
Large images, too much JavaScript, slow hosting and third-party scripts such as chat widgets and trackers.
